Egyptian Bridge in St. Petersburg

Among the six chain bridges built in the 20s of the XIX century in St. Petersburg, belonged to the Egyptian bridge, which was thrown across the Fontanka on the avenue now bearing the name of M. Yu. Lermontov. The name of this bridge comes from its original design.
The architecture of the old bridge reflected a characteristic for the 19th century of increased interest in the art of ancient Egypt. Portals, columns, as well as cornice and other parts were decorated with ornaments from hieroglyphs, and on both sides of the bridge cast iron figures of the sphinxes (sculptor PP Sokolov).
